Yoga, Tea and the Space Between

  • practice ALTADENA 2462 Lake Avenue Altadena, California, 91001 United States (map)

This practice will draw inspiration from the Japanese concept of MA 間 — meaningful space or pause between things, where awareness, connection, and possibility arise. Between one breath and the next. Between movement and stillness.

Tea ceremony is a ritual of returning to the present moment, one that asks nothing of us except to notice. As we prepare and drink tea together, we bring attention to the senses — the warmth held in the cup, the color of the tea as it settles, the scent that rises before it ever touches the tongue. In this noticing, we discover what it feels like to slow down and simply be present, without having to do anything, and without having to not do anything either. The moment is already complete as it is. We are only remembering how to meet it.

From this quiet opening, we move into an intentional, restorative yoga practice, carrying the spaciousness we've just discovered into the body. We soften into pauses between postures, let breath lead movement, and give the nervous system permission to simply rest. Supported shapes, long holds, and stillness invite the body to let go of what it's been holding, remembering that ease is not something to achieve, but something to return to.

Together, tea and yoga are an invitation to inhabit the space between effort and rest, sound and silence, one breath and the next.

What to bring: anything you would typically bring to a yoga class, journal is optional.
